By 1863, White River Junction had become an important railroad hub with 5 different railroad company terminals. The village grew steadily until the decline of rail transportation early in the 10th century. Today the downtown business district remains dominated by the Hotel Coolidge, a railroad hotel, the former railroad station, and the old 494 railroad locomotive.
