The village developed between 1848 and 1853 as a freight depot for the Vermont Central Railroad to service nearby mills. Soon it became the village center for the Town of Royalton. There are 80 significant buildings surrounding the spacious green which has a well-preserved bandstand. A row of 2-story brick commercial buildings faces one side of the green.
