The Billings Farm & Museum is privately owned and operated by the Woodstock Foundation, which was founded in 1968 by Mary F. and Laurance S. Rockefeller. The museum operates in programmatic partnership with the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park which interprets conservation stewardship in America as it is reflected in the history of the site’s Marsh, Billings, and Rockefeller eras.

The farm, established in 1871, is a fully operating dairy with a herd of 70 registered Jersey cows, as well as Southdown sheep, draft horses, oxen, and chickens, and is open and interpreted to visitors; the operation includes over 140 acres of pastures, meadows, and cropland on the Ottauquechee River. Extensive exhibits on the history of Billings Farm and late 19th-century farm life in Vermont are housed in a series of 19th-century barns. The restored 1890 Farm House offers a living history program featuring life and work on the Billings Farm around 1890 and includes a kitchen garden with heirloom varieties of vegetables and herbs and an apple orchard. An extensive schedule of daily activities and programs includes the afternoon milking of the herd, care and breeding of the livestock, and various agricultural programs. Seasonal themed special events and extensive programming for schools are offered throughout the year. A 8,500 volume research library is open to scholars by appointment.
The Visitor Center features “A Place in the Land,” a half-hour film on the history of the Billings estate and the three conservationists who lived on and developed the property over two centuries. Shown hourly in the 100-seat theater, the film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1998. Visitor amenities include a museum shop, dairy bar, and picnic area. The site is fully accessible.
