Building Accomplished Museums: Collections Stewardship
Professional Development Program
2008-2009

Are you looking for advice, instruction and hands-on assistance with your collections?

Do you need help starting or completing a collections management or exhibition project?

Are you interested in growing as an organization and creating a model collections stewardship program?
VMGA’s newest professional development opportunity combines traditional, classroom instruction with hands-on practical assistance working on actual collections-related projects selected by your organization. Designed for small to mid-sized museums without professional collections staff, this program aims to assist museums with managing, preserving, and utilizing their collections.

The Building Accomplished Museums program gives you the opportunity to build a solid foundation for your organization, its staff and volunteers that can help with museum planning, long-term preservation, and securing funding. To create an intense, customized experience, participation in the program is limited to only eight organizations. Don’t miss out on your chance to be involved!

Care & Management of Archival Collections
December 10, 2007

Vermont Ski Museum, Stowe, VT
9:30 am- 4:00 pm

Archival, or document, collections can be found in every museum and historical society, but most small institutions do not have an archivist and do not understand the special needs of an archival collection. At this workshop you will learn the basics for conducting the initial processing of an archival collection, as well as learning how to store, handle, and care for the materials in these collections– including paper, photographs, and multimedia.
The cost for the workshop is only $20 for VMGA members, $30 for non-members and includes handouts & supplies. Lunch is on your own. To register, please complete the linked registration form and return with payment to the VMGA office.

Snow Date: December 12th
This workshop is made possible by a grant from the Oakland Foundation.

Disaster Planning Resources for Vermont’s Cultural Institutions

Disasters and emergencies adversely affect Vermont’s cultural institutions every day. VMGA has put together a resource book to help organizations plan for and respond to disasters. Click here to access the book.

This resource book was created via a partnership of VMGA and the Vermont Historical Records Advisory Board under a grant from the NHPRC. Originally published in 2002, we have updated it for 2007.
