Montpelier Historic District
After several other towns had the distinction of being the state capital, Montpelier was chosen for the permanent site in 1808. It is also the county seat of Washington County. The arrival of the railroad and the National Life Insurance Company spurred the growth of the town after the Civil War. The district has a rich mixture of residential, commercial, institutional, and government buildings that make up the core of the downtown area. |
