Pawlett Historical Society
Pawlett, VT Mailing Address: The Pawlett Historical Society, founded in 1973, owns two one-room brick school houses built in the mid nineteenth century. In 1998 and 1999 the North Pawlett School underwent extensive renovation. During this period electricity, a stove and lights were added. This created a comfortable work area for volunteers and researchers, an appropriate space for storage of the collection, and an opportunity to attractively display our few large permanent artifacts. The Society publishes an newsletter three times a year with articles of local interest including the winning historical essays written annually by the sixth grade school children. It also arranges four programs a year for the membership and the general public. Pawlett for One Hundred Years, a history written by Hiel Hollister in 1867 and republished in 1976, as well as A PIctorial Scrapbook- Pawlett Vermont published in 1975 are available for sale through the society. Pages from my Pawlett Scrapbook, authored and published by the Society's historian, Dorothy Backus Offensend, is also available. Contact Person: Rena Brautigam Hours and Admission: By appointment. The Braintree School is still much as it was when it was closed in 1932, and it is visited once a year by the 5th graders to experoence an "old time school day." In June 1998 an exhibit was held there to celebrate the Society's 25th Anniversary.
