Fair Haven Historic District

Fair Haven was an early industrial center in the state, due to the efforts of Matthew Lyon, who later served in the U.S. Congress and cast the tie breaking vote that elected Thomas Jefferson president in 1801. Its economic strength came from the nearby slate and marble quarries. Partners in a local marble sawing company built the two outstanding marble houses in the 1860s. Churches, houses, and commercial, and public buildings face the spacious green.
