East Poultney Village Historic District

For a time, East Poultney was home to Horace Greeley (founder of the New York Tribune). The district is a village-scale grouping of residences, religious buildings, and former schools. Outstanding examples of high-style Federal and Greek Revival buildings reflect the presence of Elisha Scott, a 19th-century designer-builder. His work includes the East Poultney Baptist Church, constructed in 1805. The Eagle Hotel (now the Eatle Tavern) was constructed in the late 18th century.
