Brandon Historic District

The village of Brandon is an outstanding example of a 19th-century settlement. Marble-cutting mills and other industrial enterprises led to its prosperity. Marble commonly appears in curbings and sidewalks as well as in buildings. Brandon was the birthplace of Stephen A. Douglas, a Democrat who ran against Abraham Lincoln for the U.S. Presidency in 1860. The historic district has more than 200 buildings surrounding two greens.
