Numerous mills harnessing the water power of the Ompompanoosuc River were the nucleus of this village. The village has a number of historic buildings built of local brick in an unusual rich red color. Among them are the Thetford Town Hall, built in 1830 and one of the oldest town halls in Vermont, and the 1836 Gothic Revival style Methodist Church.
