Newbury Historic Districts
Located along the Connecticut River, the Town of Newbury has 6 historic districts in villages situated within the township. Agriculture and an advantageous trading location dominated the towns early history. Later, manufacturing developed based on power provided by the Wells River. The Newbury Village Historic District is concentrated around an open public common. Wells River includes commercial blocks and the surrounding residential area. West Newbury is a well-preserved village with 14 significant buildings. South Newbury is located on a ridge overlooking the Connecticut River and the White Mountains in New Hampshire. The Bayley District, north of the village on Route 5, is named for General Jacob Bayley, who founded Newbury and built the Bayley-Hazen Military Road during the Revolution. The Oxbow District is considered to be one of the most scenic spots in Vermont. |
