The schedule and exact offerings of most of the classes listed below are revised annually. The list may not include everyone, nor is it an endorsement of any particular institution or instructor. It is simply a place to start.

AVA offers year-round classes for artists in a variety of media. Fall catalogues are usually available mid-August. As in previous years, September will be devoted to workshops and intensives.
Facilities include spacious, light-filled galleries on the 1st floor and well-equipped teaching studios with high ceilings on the 2nd floor. Both galleries and studios are ADA accessible.

Along with their classes for children and teenagers, the Chaffee offers studio classes such as watercolor painting for novice and intermediate artists, life drawing, a “Support Workshop for Working Artists”, “Reflection and Critique” for classroom teachers, and “The Artist’s Way” for the inner self.. FLETCHER FARM SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS AND CRAFTS

This 50-year old school is run under the auspices of the Society of Vermont Craftsmen. Currently, there are over 100 courses from June through August with students coming from all over the United States. Offerings include decorative arts, fiber arts, wood carving, quilting, calligraphy, book binding, and basketry. Classes run on either weekends or on a weekly basis. Call for a catalogue.

The Shelburne Craft School offers classes in ceramics, wood, paper making, fiber art, and painting for high level participants. The Art Center offers classes for beginning to advanced adult students in a variety of visual and mixed media arts. Classes include oil painting, print making, pencil drawing, water color, life drawing, and Chinese brush painting. Call for a current brochure.

The Clay Studio offers a wide variety of classes, workshops, and demonstration lectures in pottery and clay sculpture for people of all skill levels. Frog Hollow offers a wide range of year-round craft classes for adults and children in Middlebury, Burlington, and Manchester. They cover stained glass, wood working, jewelry, fiber, and the “business of art”. Master classes in pottery are also offered 3 times a year in Middlebury. The Studio Center offers 4-12 week residencies (and a limited number of 2-week residencies) for 50 artists and writers per month on a year-round basis. All residents receive studio space appropriate to their medium, comfortable accommodations, and superb food. There is also a monthly roster of visiting artists who offer evening slide talks on their own work and who are available for studio visits. The purpose of the residencies is to pursue independent work and provide opportunities to experience each other’s work. Write or call for a brochure.

THE WOOD SCHOOL

The Wood School has classes in furniture building, focusing on the use of hand tools, chair making, and hand cut dovetails. There are classes in boat building. Classes vary from week long to monthly. Cost ranges from $125 to $700. There are also customized classes for groups as requested.

The Vermont Museum & Gallery Alliance is a statewide consortium with a membership of over 200 museums, art galleries, historical societies, and individuals. The Alliance promotes pubic awareness of members’ programs, provides technical assistance in the form of workshops and mentorships, and stimulates communication and cooperation among Vermont’s collecting institutions. Activities also include a long-term collections care program.

The Vermont State Craft Center at Frog Hollow is a visual arts organization dedicated to advancing appreciation of fine Vermont craft through education and exhibition. Craft Centers in Middlebury, Burlington, and Manchester offer exhibitions, demonstrations, lectures and classes in clay, glass, metal, wood, fiber, and multi-media. Master-level workshops and professional development classes for craftspeople are taught by America’s best craft teachers.
