Old Stone House Museum
Brownington, VT Mailing Address: Telephone: 802-754-2022 The museum is owned and operated by the Orleans County Historical Society. It includes five historic buildings, all dating from the first half of the 19th century, and 55 acres of surrounding farmland. The Museum buildings and four other structures near the center of the village are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Brownington Historic District. The main exhibit building, the Old Stone House, is a four-story granite structure built in the 1830s to serve as a dormitory for the Countys first secondary school. It now houses collections of 18th, 19th, and early 20th century furniture, paintings, decorative art, folk art, tools and household items. Across the road, the Lawrence Barn features an agricultural exhibit entitled A Hard Rowe to Hoe: Two Centuries of Farming in Orleans County. Visitors are invited to take a guided tour of the Museum, stroll the grounds, enjoy the 19th century gardens or walk up Prospect Hill to take in the spectacular view of the Northeast Kingdom from the observation tower.
