Island Pond Historic District
Island Pond developed after the completion in 1853 of the Grand Trunk Railway line between Montreal and Portland, Maine, the first major international railway in North America. Located at the mid-point, Island Pond became one of the most important ports of entry for rail traffic from Canada. The district features a grand two-story railway station (1903), the Opera Block, many houses built by the railway or its employees, commercial blocks, and several churches. |
