Brownington Historic District

This isolated rural community centers around the large and highly unusual Stone House, built in 1836 by the Rev. Alexander Twilight, who is reputed to be the first black American college graduate (Middlebury, 1823). It was a dormitory for the Orleans County Grammar School and is believed to be one of the most intact institutional buildings of its era in the United States. Nearby is a hill with a lookout tower that provides views of the Green Mountains, Canada, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
