Charlotte Center Historic District

Charlotte’s well-preserved village center was established in the late 18th century and developed in part because of its location on the stage route between Burlington and Troy, N.Y. By 1810, the population was greater than Burlington’s. An early tavern and trading post, Barnes Tavern, was removed to the Shelburne Museum in 1948. Another tavern, built in 1813, is on Mutton Hill, just north of the district.
