St. Johnsbury Historic District

The architecture and layout of St. Johnsbury were significantly influenced by the Fairbanks family after Thaddeus Fairbanks invented the platform scale in 1830. His family donated many of the town’s public institutions in a unique effort to provide cultural amenities for workers at the scales factory. In the late 19th century, the town also became a railroad center. The Canadian Pacific Railroad Depot, St. Johnsbury House, Fairbanks Museum, and the Athenaeum, a National Historic Landmark, are among the important buildings in the district.
