Shores Memorial Museum and Victoriana
Main Street, Lyndon Center, VT Mailing Address: Telephone: 802-626-8547 The Shores Memorial Museum, located on Main Street in Lyndon Center—four houses to the north of Town House—portrays a working man's home of the late Victorian era. Built in Queen Anne style by James Shores, it was completed in 1896 and became the home for Mr. and Mrs. Shores and their daughter, Venila. The homestead, with its formal dining room and parlors, reflects a way of life when work was hard and education highly respected. Venila Shores received a PhD degree, then was a history professor for many years before returning to her native Lyndon to research and write her town's history. The most recent exhibit traces the importance of music in Lyndon from 1877 to the present. Photographs, old organs, sheet music, musical instruments, and trophies won through years by local schools are displayed in the two parlors. The kitchen and pantries demonstrate a time when food preparation meant hours of hand labor. The collection includes wooden plates and bowls, a mortar and pestle, a wire basket for collection eggs, long-handled bedwarmer and a sadiron for pressing clothes. The upstairs room feature period clothing, an exhibit of war memorabilia, and a resource room for historical research. A doll collection is another featured exhibit.
