Founded in 1871, the Athenaeum contains the oldest art gallery maintained in its original condition in the United States, as well as the town library. The Gallery displays the nineteenth-century collection of paintings and sculptures purchased by Horace Fairbanks. Albert Bierstadt’s 10’x15' masterpiece, “The Domes of Yosemite,” creates a focal point for the Hudson River School landscapes, European genre scenes and copies of the old masters. The Athenaeum was recently designated a National Historic Landmark.
