Middlebury Village Historic District
Middlebury, the county seat of Addison County, was the most populous town in Vermont in 1830. It has an outstanding collection of historic buildings clustered around the powerful falls of the Otter Creek. The focal point is the 1806 1809 Federal style Congregational Church, the inspired work of noted architect Lavius Fillmore. Middlebury College, founded in 1800, has some of the oldest collegiate buildings in Vermont. In 1814 Emma Willard began her female seminary, the first such school in the country. |
