The Alliance is a 17-year-old consortium of Vermont museums, galleries, and historical societies which are open to the public on a regular basis, produce exhibits, hold collections, or provide educational programs. Our workshops, publications, mentoring programs, and advocacy are on behalf of Vermont’s cultural institutions both large and small, both professional and volunteer. We provide a forum for staff from the large institutions to share their expertise and experience with museums and galleries which could otherwise not afford outside help or who are not sufficiently organized to take advantage of grants programs, exhibit assistance, or conservation services.

The Alliance also works with other statewide organizations to encourage the exchange of information and offer technical assistance. The Guide to Vermont Museums, Galleries and Historic Places is co-sponsored by VMGA, Vermont Life and the Vermont Historical Society. Gallery Spaces for Vermont Artists is co-sponsored by VMGA and the Vermont State Craft Center at Frog Hollow.

VMGA is supported by its 250 members, the Vermont Council on the Arts, and other grants for special projects. Our Board of Directors come to us from museums, historical societies, and galleries throughout the state. We are also grateful to the Billings Farm and Museum for donating our headquarters.
